Students at the Tanya Pearson Classical Coaching Academy have had some exciting times over the last few months.
In December, Phoebe Warlow was awarded the prestigious Royal Academy of Dance National Advance 1 Bursary in Sydney, whilst in February, over a dozen TPCCA students returned from an annual European Tour where they auditioned at various selective schools and junior companies. Ten of the students were offered places.
Finalists for the Royal Academy of Dance Bursary are chosen from around Australia. Candidates must have achieved a distinction in their Royal Academy of Dance Advance 1 examination, but not yet have completed their Advance 2.
In the last year alone, Phoebe Warlow was awarded the Society of Dance Arts Intermediate Classical Ballet Scholarship, from 80 competitors Australia wide; was a finalist in the Sydney Eisteddfod Robert & Elizabeth Albert Scholarship, winner of the Sydney Eisteddfod U14 Contemporary section, plus winner of the Silver Medal at the Cecchetti Medal Awards Competition.
When DanceNSW followed up with Phoebe on her successes, she said there were six other people competing in the finals for the Bursary, some of whom she knows really well. “We were all so relieved to see familiar faces on the day” Phoebe said.
When asked how it feels to have so many successes in such a short amount of time, Phoebe said “I always try to work as hard as I can and it’s a lovely bonus to do well along the way. Mrs Pearson and all my teachers help me to achieve any successes that I have, and I am always very grateful to have so many passionate teachers. I would have to say that the highlight so far has probably been receiving the prize for Bursary. I think it was the thrill that it was a national competition.”
As for future aspirations, Phoebe feels “I have a lot to do this year, and I take one thing at a time. I would love to qualify for Genee in London later this year. I don't know what my path will be next year yet, but ultimately at some stage I would love to work for the Australian Ballet.”

Zoe Roberts was one of the TPCCA students who was successful in her auditions overseas. Indeed, she was offered places at every school she auditioned at, including Graduate Year at the Royal Ballet School, which she is accepting.
We asked Zoe to tell us something about her experiences:
“(The tour took us to) Europe and London. We auditioned and went to Mannheim, Den Haag, Amsterdam Hamburg, Berlin, Dresden, Vienna, Munich, Zurich, Basel and London. The trip took about three weeks travelling on a bus.
“There wasn’t just one highlight, but there were some cities that I particularly loved. London, Munich, Amsterdam… We were allowed to watch Company Class of the Bayerisches Staatsballett (Munich Ballet Company). They were so amazing – that was my highlight!
“I feel so enriched and lucky for going on that tour. I was exposed to so many different teachers, schools and styles…. I feel inspired to work harder than ever after seeing the wealth of appreciation of the arts overseas. I also think I’ve gained more confidence in myself from the positive experience.”

Students who participated in the tour and were successful in their auditions will continue their training at TPCCA until September when they will commence their studies overseas.
