“Dark matter” comprises roughly 96% of the observable universe, and yet its nature remains a mystery. "

This is a theme that fascinates British Columbia choreographer, Crystal Pite, who brings this work and her Vancouver company, Kidd-Pivot, to Sydney in January.

Crystal Pite trained in dance at the Pacific Dance Centre, the National Ballet School, the Banff Centre for Arts and the School of Toronto Dance Theatre.  She joined Ballet British Columbia in 1988, and choreographed her first work in 1990.  Since then, she has created new works for international dance companies, and joined Ballett Frankfurt in Germany in 1996, under the directorship of William Forsythe.

Crystal returned to Canada in 2001 and founded her dance company, Kidd-Pivot.  She continues to create and perform in her own work.

Dark Matters is a work structured in two parts: Act One portrays the tension between creation and destruction through a decidedly theatrical fable; Act Two is pure dance, with choreography that grapples with the essential question of free will and the conflict inherent in manipulation.

The works explores “what we don’t know” and the darkness and ‘connotation of gloom’ ‘dark matter’ conjures up.

Crystal Pite is said to have a distinct style that fuses classical elements, the complexity and freedom of structured improvisation and a strong theatrical sensibility.
